Port Alberni, BC
As the gateway to the West Coast, Port Alberni offers access to wilderness so amazing, you can only realize it when you're there. The surroundings are incredible; surging rivers filled with salmon and trout compete for attention with forests of giant trees towering more than 61 m (200 ft) into the heavens. The stunning MacMillian Provincial Park is only a short 20-km (12-mi.) drive east of Port Alberni on Highway 4. Trek into the park and explore the unbelievable beauty of Cathedral Grove, the “Doorstep to the Pacific Rim.” Over 1000 years old, this old growth forest is home to ancient red cedars and majestic 900-year-old Douglas fir. Surviving both a devastating forest fire and massive windstorm within the past 300 years, the strength of the giant trees permeates in the air around them. Spend the day hiking through one of the world’s most striking, yet humbling areas.
